Maneesha Tai’s story is of true grit, strength and is nothing short of inspiring.

Born on May 26, 1953, she was declared as a ‘dead child’ at birth, but Dr. Shriram Ranade from Ahmednagar miraculously revived her. Through the advice of medical experts and guided by her parents Purshottam Sathe and Vimlabai Sathe, she delved into the world of physical activity and art.

Maneesha Tai, began her Kathak journey under Pt. Balasaheb Gokhale in Pune. At the mere age of 11, with the unwavering support of her parents she moved to Mumbai to learn under Natraj Pt. Gopikrishna ji himself. A day in her life was nothing short of rigorous. More than 5 hours of early morning and evening practice mixed with her academic commitments and school hours, Tai’s tale is of focus, determination and consistency. Learning Kathak under Gopiji was no ordinary feat. His strict and intensive training style shaped her into a disciplined artist who has always strived for perfection.

Maneesha Tai was only 16 when she performed on an international platform …

….for the first time and then there was no turning back. Gradually Tai transitioned from a student to a teacher with the blessings of her Guru Gopi Krishna Ji. After deep introspection, analysis and a thorough study, Tai curated her own method of imparting the Kathak principles. This very teaching method has been the heart of Maneesha Nrityalaya and the reason why Maneesha Tai’s disciples stand out from the crowd

In 1975, Maneesha Nrityalaya was established with the core principles of precision, perfection, hard-work and discipline.

50 years hence and it still runs on those very principles. Tai’s approach to Kathak was refreshing, unique and pioneering in those times. With her keen eye for aesthetics, symmetry and precision she transformed the inherent masculine style of Gopiji into one that was more feminine, graceful and artistically refined. With the support of her husband, Rajas Sathe and her parents, Tai set out to bring about a new chapter in the classical dance space of the city of Pune. Ticketed classical dance shows were not a common practice back in the day, but Tai’s decision to present her students of all levels in a ‘ticketed’ annual showcase was groundbreaking. This annual showcase was not just a program but a conscious effort taken by Tai. The intention was to spread awareness about the efforts dancers take and the need for them to get their due where required as well as to give a platform to the students to perform, learn and grow.

Maneesha Tai’s collaboration with Japanese musician and Taiko player, Mr. Yasuhito Takimoto is legendary…

…and has been leaving audiences in awe for over 25 years. This collaboration is pivotal in the classical dance community in the larger picture. The production is an embodiment of grandeur and magnificence. Through this collaboration, a number of senior disciples from Maneesha Nrityalaya have received special training for playing the Taiko drums themselves!
